Jennifer Cronin is the departing President at Wharf Hotels who has been steering Hong Kong Out Of The Current Crisis.
Dr Jennifer Cronin is Australian and has spent a life time working in highly stressful crisis situations. From The Bali bombings to 9/11, SARS and now the pandemic, she has spent her career working her way out of crisis’.
She even returned to study at Bond University where she obtained a masters in crisis management before returning to Hong Kong where she has been able to apply what she learnt to the pandemic situation.
“This by far the toughest crisis I have had to manage,” she says. “It has been so prolonged which has made it so challenging for everyone.”

She has five key pieces of advice for anyone managing a crisis:
- Get your facts before you act.
- Communicate as much as you can – this is really the key to the whole thing.
- Businesses and hotels need crisis manuals.
- Be visible with your staff, even if you can only be on zoom, do it regularly.
- Stay ahead of the curve as much as you can by staying informed.
Cronin says the job of hotel manager has changed significantly, she started as a room service waitress, and has seen every aspect of luxury hotels change. “Hoteliers are so much more than serving cup[s of coffee. We are managing multi million dollar assets and hundreds even thousands of people and their livelihoods.”
