Colombo Hotels. Where to stay in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Colombo Hotels. Where to stay in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo has some pretty fabulous places to stay – and eat, especially for families.

The best Colombo hotels  include luxury hotels, boutique hotels, budget hotels and Colombo hotel deals. So be sure to shop around.

There are many travellers who don’t rate Colombo. And in truth, it is a dusty, over-populated city.

But it has some excellently stylish hotels, fabulous, modern restaurants and if you’re into jewellery, the gems & jewellery is some of the best in the world.

Plenty of royals, celebrities and politicians have been here to buy jewellery, including  Prince Charles who bought sapphires there for the late Princess Diana. Sri-Lanka is famed for both white and blue sapphires, and there are many, many other stones mined there.

This is a sample of some of Colombo’s hotels I have enjoyed:

Colombo Hotels
Maniumpathy provides intimacy and luxury accommodation.

Maniumpathy:

This is more like a luxury home than hotel, and is located discreetly in a fashionable and elite district of Colombo 7. The building was home to five generations of the same family, the last transforming it with an ambitious renovation into a hotel.

There’s a pool and luxury interiors which include marble and antiques.

Guests in the 8 suites stay here to step back in time and experience traditional colonial Sri Lankan Living.Boutique shops, art galleries and Royal Colombo Gold Course are close.

Jetwing Colombo Seven

Jetwing Colombo Seven:

If you travel around Sri-Lanka, JetWing is a name you will see regularly. Their hotels are upmarket, clean and generally have large rooms and suites. This city version is no exception, and even has a few apartments. Great for families.

The high-rise hotel is located in a local, suburban area with a stunning 13th floor infinity pool with restaurant-bar and stunning city views. Perfect for instagram.

Colombo Hotels

Shangri-La Hotel; This is the city’s newest and its pretty fabulous on all 35 levels. the ocean front high rise even has its own fragrance. Being new, it is hard to beat.

The towering lobby serves a sensational high tea kids love. All of the restaurants are top notch with chic, modern, stylish interiors. The ground floor steak house is stunningly decorated and there are two bars  for an international standard drink.

Serious money has been invested in the interiors which are spectacular.

When staying there, the pool is gorgeous. Rooms are clean, spacious and neutral in tones. Suites overlooking the ocean are the best. This the kind of 5 star hotel you don’t need to leave.

Taj Hotel Club Rooms
The newly refurbished Taj Hotel Club Rooms

The Taj Hotel; This Colombo Hotel’s rooms are undergoing renovation and the new interiors are world class. Pastel hues, plush king size beds and large bathrooms make this a luxurious five star place to stay.

The gym is sensational with every type of equipment you could dream of, TV’s with inspirational workouts to follow and plenty of cardio as well as weight equipment.

The breakfast buffet is excellent with freshly made eggs and local delights.

There’s a huge bar in the lobby, with reasonable wines  and an excellent Chinese restaurant.

Galle Face Hotel
Galle Face Hotel

Galle Face Hotel: This 19th century Colombo hotel’s colonial architecture and location right on the ocean makes it a classically elegant place to stay. It sits on the edge of the Gall Face green, the city’s biggest seaside promenade.

Be aware there were two very different standards and styles of rooms. Some are renovated and spacious, others are old and small.

The long sea-facing swimming pool is large and right next to the sea. The poolside restaurant is a favourite for a casual lunch, and has a pleasant, summery European feel.

The hotel’s celebrity history is outlined in the bar inside the main building, a pleasantly old fashioned place to kick off or finish an evening out. The main restaurant has a different buffet each night from Japanese to Sri-Lankan and Western, but there’s something about the hotel that’s old world luxe.

Cinnamon Grand
Cinnamon Grand
Cinnamon Grand/Cinnamon Red: These two Colombo hotels are great for families.

Cinnamon Grand has a shopping centre on site, a huge sprawling lobby, gorgeous ground floor cafe with home made cakes and echolocates and is a great place to relax.

Ideal for families with young children,  as you don’t have to leave. Rooms are reasonably sized, great swimming pool area. Everything is reasonably priced.

Colombo Hotels

Cinnamon Red is one of the bargain Colombo hotels. It has a fabulous rooftop infinity pool and bar with views across the city. This is a budget family or business hotel, but once you get past the tacky red interiors, it’s good value for money.

The rooftop is great fun by day or night, and the breakfast buffet is excellent. Staff aim to please. Great location to walk to some of Colombo’s best restaurants.
