Colombo has changed enormously in the past few years. Sri Lanka’s commercial capital was once treated by many international travellers as little more than an overnight stop before heading south to Galle, into tea country or towards the island’s beaches, but a new generation of luxury hotels, restaurants, retail and large-scale developments is giving visitors far more reason to stay.
Plenty of royals, celebrities and politicians have been here to buy jewellery, including Prince Charles who bought sapphires there for the late Princess Diana. Sri-Lanka is famed for both white and blue sapphires, and there are many, many other stones mined there.
The city can still be hot, congested and gloriously chaotic, but that is part of its personality. Along the waterfront and around Galle Face, dramatic new towers now sit beside some of Asia’s great heritage hotels, while quieter neighbourhoods such as Colombo 7 hide boutique properties behind tropical gardens and old walls. Colombo is also an excellent place to explore Sri Lankan food, contemporary design and the country’s famous gem trade, particularly its prized Ceylon sapphires.

Nüwa at City of Dreams Sri Lanka: Colombo’s New Ultra-Luxury Arrival
One of the most important additions is Nüwa Sri Lanka, the 113-room ultra-luxury hotel within the enormous City of Dreams Sri Lanka development. Nüwa occupies the upper levels of the complex and is designed as the more exclusive of the resort’s two hotel experiences, with a stronger emphasis on privacy, personalised service and high-end suites.
Nüwa officially became part of the completed City of Dreams development in August 2025, alongside the opening of the casino, luxury retail and entertainment components. For travellers who like the scale and energy of integrated resorts in cities such as Macau or Singapore, this represents something entirely new for Colombo.
Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams: Best for Entertainment and a Big-City Experience
Next door, Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams is a very different proposition. The 687-room hotel opened in October 2024 as the first stage of the City of Dreams development, before the wider resort was completed the following year. City of Dreams is now billed as South Asia’s first fully integrated luxury resort, combining its two hotels with dining, retail, wellness, entertainment, major conference facilities and gaming. It is one of the developments most visibly changing Colombo’s skyline and the way the city positions itself for international luxury and business tourism.
ITC Ratnadipa: Best New Luxury Hotel for Indian Ocean Views
ITC Ratnadipa, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Colombo opened in 2024 and immediately became one of Colombo’s most architecturally ambitious luxury hotels. Shangri-La Colombo is no longer the new arrival it was when I first wrote this guide, but it remains one of the most complete luxury hotels in Colombo.
Facing the Indian Ocean and Galle Face Green, the hotel has 541 rooms, suites and serviced apartments, seven restaurants and bars and direct access to One Galle Face Mall. That connection is particularly convenient in Colombo’s heat, putting international fashion, restaurants and shopping within easy reach without requiring another trip through the city’s traffic.
The hotel works extremely well for families and travellers who want everything at their fingertips. Rooms are spacious and contemporary, while ocean-facing accommodation is worth requesting if budget permits. Shangri-La’s scale also means there is enough dining, wellness, shopping and social activity within the complex that you could quite easily spend a day without leaving.
Maniumpathy: Best Boutique Hotel in Colombo
For something far more intimate, Maniumpathy remains one of Colombo’s loveliest boutique options. Hidden away on Kynsey Road in Colombo 7, this former family residence feels much more like staying in an elegant private home than in a conventional city hotel.
The appeal is its scale and atmosphere. Heritage architecture, antiques, marble, tropical planting and a swimming pool create an immediate sense of calm, particularly after navigating Colombo’s busy streets. Few Colombo hotels have the sense of history of Galle Face Hotel. Sitting directly beside Galle Face Green and the Indian Ocean, the grand 19th-century property remains one of Sri Lanka’s best-known heritage hotels and one of the oldest historic hotels in the region.

Across from Galle Face, Taj Samudra, Colombo remains another established five-star address. Its location is excellent for both business travellers and visitors wanting easy access to the waterfront, Fort and central Colombo.
The Taj experience is particularly strong for travellers who value food, generous public spaces and the warmth associated with Indian hospitality. Its facilities include several restaurants and lounges as well as a large outdoor swimming pool, while the hotel’s scale makes it a practical choice for longer stays, events and families.
Jetwing Colombo Seven: Best for a Rooftop Pool in Colombo 7
Jetwing Colombo Seven remains one of the best-known contemporary hotels in Colombo 7. Jetwing is a Sri Lankan name travellers will encounter throughout the country, and this urban property offers the consistency of an established local hotel group in a particularly convenient city location.
Its standout feature is still the rooftop infinity pool, with broad views across Colombo, accompanied by a rooftop restaurant and bar. The hotel also has a spa and gym, while its combination of standard rooms, suites and apartment-style accommodation can work particularly well for families or guests staying in Colombo for more than a night or two.
Cinnamon Grand Colombo: Best for Families, Dining and a Central Location
Cinnamon Grand Colombo remains one of the city’s large, established hotels and continues to make sense for families and business travellers who value convenience. Its central location places guests close to Galle Face Green, cultural attractions and Crescat Boulevard, while the hotel itself has an extensive selection of restaurants and substantial leisure and event facilities.
There is a large swimming pool, wellness facilities and an executive lounge, but food is one of the reasons people continue to return. With everything from Sri Lankan flavours to Indian dining, seafood and traditional fine dining represented within the property, it is the sort of large hotel where families can settle in without needing to organise every meal elsewhere.
Cinnamon Red Colombo: Best Affordable Hotel With a Rooftop Pool
For travellers prioritising value, Cinnamon Red Colombo remains a useful alternative to Colombo’s increasingly expensive five-star hotels. It is contemporary rather than luxurious, but offers one feature many far more expensive hotels would envy: a rooftop infinity pool and bar looking across the city.
The rooms are relatively straightforward, but the combination of location, rooftop facilities and accessible pricing makes it a good option for younger travellers, short business trips or anyone who would rather spend their budget on restaurants and experiences than on a large hotel room. It is also well positioned for exploring central Colombo.
Granbell Hotel Colombo: Another Good-Value Oceanfront Option
Granbell Hotel Colombo is another name worth knowing for travellers looking for a stylish Colombo hotel without moving into the highest luxury price bracket. Located on Marine Drive in Colombo 3, the hotel has become popular for its rooftop facilities and views over the Indian Ocean.
It is more contemporary and youthful than Colombo’s heritage hotels, making it particularly suitable for couples, solo travellers and shorter stays. For travellers searching online for affordable hotels in Colombo with a rooftop pool, both Granbell and Cinnamon Red are worth comparing.
So, Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Colombo?
The answer now depends far more on the kind of Colombo experience you want. For contemporary ultra-luxury and privacy, Nüwa is the most intriguing new arrival. For a huge entertainment-led resort, Cinnamon Life and the wider City of Dreams development have changed the equation completely, while ITC Ratnadipa is one of the strongest choices for new-generation five-star luxury and waterfront views.
Shangri-La remains difficult to beat for convenience, shopping and a polished international five-star experience, while Galle Face Hotel offers something none of the new towers can manufacture: history. Maniumpathy is my choice when intimacy and atmosphere matter more than scale, and Jetwing Colombo Seven, Cinnamon Red and Granbell offer strong alternatives at lower price points.
Colombo is still a city many travellers rush through on their way to Sri Lanka’s beaches, tea plantations and cultural sites, but that is increasingly a mistake. With ambitious new luxury hotels, excellent restaurants, historic addresses, contemporary shopping and the Indian Ocean running along its western edge, Colombo is becoming a destination worth giving at least a couple of nights of its own.

Jetwing Colombo Seven:
If you travel around Sri-Lanka, JetWing is a name you will see regularly. Their hotels are upmarket, clean and generally have large rooms and suites. This city version is no exception, and even has a few apartments. Great for families.
The high-rise hotel is located in a local, suburban area with a stunning 13th floor infinity pool with restaurant-bar and stunning city views. Perfect for instagram.
Shangri-La Hotel; This is the city’s newest and its pretty fabulous on all 35 levels. the ocean front high rise even has its own fragrance. Being new, it is hard to beat.
The towering lobby serves a sensational high tea kids love. All of the restaurants are top notch with chic, modern, stylish interiors. The ground floor steak house is stunningly decorated and there are two bars for an international standard drink.
Serious money has been invested in the interiors which are spectacular.
When staying there, the pool is gorgeous. Rooms are clean, spacious and neutral in tones. Suites overlooking the ocean are the best. This the kind of 5 star hotel you don’t need to leave.
The Taj Hotel; This Colombo Hotel’s rooms are undergoing renovation and the new interiors are world class. Pastel hues, plush king size beds and large bathrooms make this a luxurious five star place to stay.
The gym is sensational with every type of equipment you could dream of, TV’s with inspirational workouts to follow and plenty of cardio as well as weight equipment.
The breakfast buffet is excellent with freshly made eggs and local delights.
There’s a huge bar in the lobby, with reasonable wines and an excellent Chinese restaurant.
Galle Face Hotel: This 19th century Colombo hotel’s colonial architecture and location right on the ocean makes it a classically elegant place to stay. It sits on the edge of the Gall Face green, the city’s biggest seaside promenade.
Be aware there were two very different standards and styles of rooms. Some are renovated and spacious, others are old and small.
The long sea-facing swimming pool is large and right next to the sea. The poolside restaurant is a favourite for a casual lunch, and has a pleasant, summery European feel.
The hotel’s celebrity history is outlined in the bar inside the main building, a pleasantly old fashioned place to kick off or finish an evening out. The main restaurant has a different buffet each night from Japanese to Sri-Lankan and Western, but there’s something about the hotel that’s old world luxe.
Cinnamon Grand has a shopping centre on site, a huge sprawling lobby, gorgeous ground floor cafe with home made cakes and echolocates and is a great place to relax.
Ideal for families with young children, as you don’t have to leave. Rooms are reasonably sized, great swimming pool area. Everything is reasonably priced.
Cinnamon Red is one of the bargain Colombo hotels. It has a fabulous rooftop infinity pool and bar with views across the city. This is a budget family or business hotel, but once you get past the tacky red interiors, it’s good value for money.
The rooftop is great fun by day or night, and the breakfast buffet is excellent. Staff aim to please. Great location to walk to some of Colombo’s best restaurants.
