The Siam Hotel in Bangkok is quite simply a five star masterpiece.
Bangkok is a city like no other. With its intoxicating mix of heat, humidity, modernity, and traditional Thai culture, it’s a destination that never fails to leave an impression.
Against the frenetic pace of this vibrant city lies a serene luxurious retreat,The Siam Hotel.
Not withstanding over two decades experience, reviewing luxury hotels, The Siam managed to sweep me off my feet and surprise me at every turn – largely due to the design brilliance of the hotel’s designer, American landscape architect Bill Bensley.
This video review of The Siam brings to life every detail of this urban sanctuary, highlighting why The Siam is one of Bangkok’s most iconic luxury hotels.
First Impressions: An Oasis of Elegance
Stepping into The Siam’s foyer, I felt as though I had been transported to an Indochine bar of yesteryear. The hotel’s interiors, a series of breathtakingly appointed spaces, are a sensory feast.
Designed by the legendary Bill Bensley, The Siam is a masterclass in pairing understated architecture with carefully curated excess. Much of it black and white, and lush greenery abounds.
I marvelled at how the property effortlessly balances calming restraint with opulent touches, creating an atmosphere of timeless sophistication and calm.
From the moment I arrived, the hotel’s location along the Chao Phraya River sets it apart. Being away from the chaotic city center allows guests to enjoy a tranquil environment while still having access to Bangkok’s cultural and culinary delights. The swimming pool is one of the world’s best with a unique black and white design, a luxe lawn and bar area, and it runs opposite the river.
The private pier offers a stunning setting for sunset cocktails, watching the passing parade of water traffic, which for me was “pure magic.”
Design That Tells a Story
The unique vision of designer Bill Bensley makes this property a stand out, as guests discover more and more of his creations during a stay. Even the gym is stylish!
The Sukosol family, owners of the hotel, have filled the property with personal treasures, including antiques and vintage Thai curios.
Food is excellent, a highlight for me was breakfast in a type pf designer outhouse next to the river with exceptionally modern offerings from both east and west. And fantastic coffee.
Exceptional Rooms and Personalised Service
My stay at The Siam was nothing short of transformative. The level of service at The Siam is another winning aspect of a stay at this hotel. Staff are warm, kind and knowledgeable. There is even a small book in the room with reccommended local restaurants and bars for long stay guests.
The Siam’s sprawling Opium Spa, sitting in the Siam’s basement was a destination I loved. Voted the best urban spa in the world by Condé Nast Traveler, it offers treatments that blend traditional Thai techniques with modern wellness practices.
The video captures some of the essence of what makes The Siam truly special, which for me is the blend of impeccable design, a serene location, world-class service, and cultural authenticity, as well as the fabulous Australian General Manager Nick Downing who is sensational, and whose genius has created much of what is best about this property.
