Sofitel Melbourne on Collins Review, A Grand Dame
For decades, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins has quietly occupied a place within the fabric and heartbeat of Melbourne, a luxury five star hotel woven into Melbourne’s artistic, theatrical and cultural life. I have been staying there since I was a young girl, and it has been through several name changes and renovations, but the old world elegant vibe remains.
For decades, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins has quietly occupied a place within the fabric and heartbeat of the city — a five-star luxury hotel in Melbourne CBD woven into its artistic, theatrical and cultural life. I have been staying there since I was a young girl, and while it has evolved through several name changes and renovations, the old-world elegance remains firmly intact.
Its proximity to the Princess Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre and the Arts Centre means performers and creatives often stay here during extended seasons. Over the years, the corridors have hosted ballet dancers, orchestral musicians, actors and touring performers — giving the hotel a subtle but unmistakable connection to the arts.
That artistic relationship is reflected inside the hotel too. Sofitel properties around the world are known for their connection to culture and design, and Melbourne’s outpost is no exception. Sculptural installations, elegant modern artworks and carefully curated pieces appear throughout the lobby and public spaces, creating an atmosphere that feels both refined and quietly creative.
For me, however, the connection runs deeper than design. I first stayed here as a child, and returning many years later brought an unexpected rush of nostalgia. Some hotels simply stay with you — and this is one of those rare luxury hotels in Melbourne CBD that delivers both memory and meaning.
Returning now as an adult, I could finally appreciate the hotel properly.
What I discovered was something increasingly rare: a confidently old-school five-star hotel in Melbourne, with impeccable service, sweeping bay views, some of Melbourne’s best cocktails and a distinctly French sense of style.
This is a hotel stay that unfolds gradually. As the staff begin to recognise you and anticipate your needs, the experience deepens — a hallmark of true luxury accommodation in Melbourne. I adored my room, complete with elegant shutters and expansive views across the bay. It had just the right balance of light, calm and understated luxury.

Overall Rating: 8/10
Location: 10/10
Location is everything in a city hotel, and the address of Sofitel Melbourne On Collins is amongst the most prestigious in Australia. It reeks of elegance and style at every turn.
The hotel sits at the Paris end of Collins Street, the historic stretch of Melbourne’s CBD known for its elegant architecture, luxury boutiques, theatres and refined restaurants. The nickname is fitting — the wide boulevard, heritage buildings and cultural institutions create an atmosphere that feels distinctly European.
For a French luxury brand like Sofitel, the location feels perfectly aligned with its identity.
The hotel itself occupies the upper levels of a large mixed-use tower that also houses offices, restaurants, cafés and boutiques. This vertical neighbourhood gives the building a lively atmosphere, yet once you ascend to the hotel floors the mood becomes calm and elevated above the bustle below.
Step outside and the city unfolds effortlessly. Parliament House sits across the street, the Princess Theatre is a short walk away, and Melbourne’s famous laneways — packed with wine bars, restaurants and street art — are only minutes from the door.
A tram stop sits directly outside the hotel, and within Melbourne’s CBD tram travel is free. In truth, however, most guests find themselves walking everywhere. The Bourke Street Mall shopping precinct, Federation Square, the Yarra River and even Melbourne’s sporting precinct are within easy reach.
Few locations capture Melbourne’s cultural life and style as perfectly as this stretch of Collins Street.

Rooms 8.5/10
One of the most distinctive aspects of the hotel is its vertical design. Unlike many city hotels where only premium suites enjoy views, here every room sits high above the city.
Accommodation begins on Level 36, meaning even entry-level rooms offer extraordinary perspectives.
The most coveted rooms are the Bay View rooms, which look across the Yarra River and stretch all the way to Port Phillip Bay. On a clear day the water shimmers in the distance, creating a horizon rarely seen from a city hotel.
Yet the city-facing rooms are equally dramatic. At night Melbourne transforms into a glowing grid of lights stretching across the suburbs — a glittering urban panorama that feels almost cinematic.
Inside, rooms are elegant rather than trendy — a reflection of Sofitel’s classic European design philosophy. Plush bedding, refined furnishings and generous space make the rooms feel comfortable and quietly luxurious. Sustainable Balmain products in the bathrooms elevate the whole in-room vibe.
Suites add even more space, with separate living areas and large windows that frame the city views like living artwork.

Food & Beverage 8/10
Dining at Sofitel Melbourne is one of the hotel’s defining experiences.
High above the city sits Restaurant No.35, a long-standing Melbourne dining room known for its spectacular skyline views. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the city from every angle, making dinner here feel almost theatrical.
Watching the city shift from sunset to glittering night while enjoying dinner is an experience in itself.
Naturally, the evening begins with Pommery Champagne, a fittingly French touch that reinforces the Sofitel brand’s heritage.
The chefs menu focuses on refined modern cuisine, highlighting fresh seasonal Australian ingredients while maintaining the elegance expected from a French luxury hotel. We selected the matching local wines which was a real treat and truly indulgent.
The hotel bar on 35 provides a more relaxed but equally stylish setting. Classic cocktails are executed perfectly, but the real standout is the citron tarte cocktail.
Sweet, citrusy and indulgent, it tastes remarkably like a slice of lemon tart transformed into a drink — essentially dessert in a glass. Simply awesome and delicious.
Service across the hotel’s dining venues is polished and warm, reflecting the hospitality style Sofitel has built its reputation on worldwide. You must book for the bar or the restaurant as they are always busy and often full.

Fitness 7/10 (no spa)
While the hotel’s greatest luxury is arguably its views, the fitness facilities are thoughtfully designed.
The gym is well equipped with modern machines and positioned high enough to take advantage of Melbourne’s skyline.
Running on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike while looking out across the city creates a far more inspiring workout than the typical hotel fitness room.
But it’s the massage chair that caught my eye. It is free to use and is a brilliant way to start a day, a workout or simply chill out.
Style & Atmosphere 8.5/10
Ultimately, what makes Sofitel Melbourne On Collins special is its sense of timelessness. In an era where many hotels chase design trends and lifestyle concepts, Sofitel remains proudly classic.
This is an old-school five-star hotel — polished service, elegant interiors and a quiet confidence that comes from decades of hospitality experience.
The French influence runs throughout the property: from the Champagne selections and culinary style to the understated elegance of the décor.
Being located at the Paris end of Collins Street only strengthens this feeling. The boulevard-like street, nearby theatres and artistic heritage create an atmosphere that feels almost European.
Service 9/10
The staff here are a highlight as they are so warm and friendly – and consistent. The bar staff in the cocktail lounge on floor 35 were fabulous, as were the breakfast staff who were warm and kind.
In the VIP lounge, the staff have been trained to anticipate guest’s needs, and ensure guests are happy. That is definitely the best of the hotel not only in service but in food, style and views.

Sustainability 8/10
In line with evolving expectations of luxury travellers, Sofitel Melbourne On Collins has increasingly embraced sustainability without compromising its signature elegance. Across the hotel, thoughtful initiatives reflect a broader shift within the luxury hospitality industry towards responsible travel.
Energy-efficient systems, reduced single-use plastics and a growing focus on locally sourced produce within its dining offering all contribute to a more conscious guest experience. This aligns with a wider movement seen across Sofitel globally, where sustainability is no longer a feature, but an expectation.
Luxe Balmain products in the bathroom are presented in re-usable bottles combining the best of sustainability.
Shopping, Dining & The Collins Place Advantage 9.5/10
This is part of the location but deserves a category of its own. One of the hotel’s most underrated advantages is what sits directly beneath it. Sofitel Melbourne On Collins is integrated into Collins Place, a sophisticated shopping and dining precinct that adds another layer of convenience and lifestyle appeal.
Guests have immediate access to cafés, wine bars, casual dining options and boutique retailers without ever stepping far from the building — a rarity in luxury city hotels.
Whether it’s a morning coffee, a quick business lunch or a relaxed evening glass of wine, the precinct creates a seamless extension of the hotel experience – and a real buzz especially during the week.
Combined with its proximity to Melbourne’s best luxury shopping on Collins Street and Bourke Street Mall, the location firmly positions Sofitel as one of the best luxury hotels in Melbourne for shopping, dining and culture.
