Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá Hotel Madrid Review, the stunning five star Madrid Hotel with free flow Ruinart Champagne
.
Overall Rating: 9/10
The Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá delivers a truly five-star Spanish experience in the heart of Madrid, Spain’s capital. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century palace once belonging to the Dukes of Ega and Villahermosa, this iconic hotel blends royal heritage with contemporary sophistication.
I spent 4 days there in summer 2025 and loved every minute. From lavish interiors inspired by Velázquez’s masterpieces, a serene rooftop terrace with a seasonal pool, to stunning views across Madrid, fine dining, and a prime location near Madrid’s top attractions — including the Royal Palace, Teatro Real, and Gran Vía, this is a truly luxurious, authentically Spanish hotel.
The combination of historic surroundings, luxurious accommodation, and a commitment to personalised wellness offerings distinguishes this hotel as a leader in holistic hospitality in Madrid.

The area around the hotel is brilliant for morning walks, and everything is close. The hotel has a shuttle on a first come first served basis which is fabulous for kicking off each day with a drop off to another area and a long, slow walk back.
The breakfast buffet is first class, and there is a tiered system with Red Level Club suite guests having their own breakfast area with free flow Ruinart, and a separate outdoor area and a quieter space to start the day.
There are 39 five star hotels in Madrid and this one stands out for its authentic Spanish feel and design. Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá Madrid stands out as one of the best luxury hotels in Madrid, offering timeless elegance, five-star service, and unbeatable perks like Red Level club access and Ruinart Champagne free flow all day.

With cultural institutions, local tapas bars, boutique shopping, and museums nearby, the location is unbeatable for first-time visitors and returning travellers alike. It is about 30 minutes drive from the airport.

???? Rooms: 9/10
Rooms and suites are luxuriously appointed with high-end touches incldu9ing Nespresso machines, Carner Barcelona amenities, plush bedding, soundproof windows, and decor inspired by Diego Velázquez’s palette.
Most feature both a bathtub and rain shower, and superior soundproofing ensures a restful stay. There is under floor heating in many rooms for winter.
Guests booking Red Level Rooms and Suites enjoy elevated services, well wroth the investment, such as access to a private lounge, personalised check-in, exclusive concierge service, and complimentary Ruinart Champagne free-flow all day — a signature highlight that sets this hotel apart in the luxury segment.

???? Style & Character: 9/10
The hotel is a work of art in itself. Originally a 19th-century palace and former Dominican convent, it masterfully blends historic architecture with modern Spanish elegance.
From original stonework and classic façades to striking reproductions of Velázquez’s “Las Meninas” and rich textiles in ochre and indigo, the property is a tribute to Madrid’s cultural heritage and soul.
Wellness: 9/10
At Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá in Madrid, wellness is an exquisite fusion of heritage elegance and advanced relaxation, anchored by its remarkable spa facilities, Thia massage services and tranquil spaces.
The Thai Room Spa stands out for its authentic, expertly delivered Thai massages, offering guests a sanctuary of calm and rejuvenation within the grandeur of a former palace.
Its reputation for outstanding treatments and serene ambiance makes it the hotel’s crown jewel for wellness seekers, complementing the luxury experience with world-class relaxation therapies which I found brilliant to ease jet lag having flown into Madrid from sydney.
Beyond the spa, the hotel features a stunning rooftop terrace with a seasonal pool and panoramic views, perfect for morning yoga or sunset unwind sessions. Drinks are served all day around the pool in summer and couples can laze on the luxe cabanas and drift in and out of a sun kissed siesta. The pool furniture is in elegant hues of hazelnut and coffee, which adds depth and sophistication to the whole rooftop vibe.

???? Sustainability: 8/10
While not fully eco-certified, the hotel emphasises sustainable luxury through energy-efficient systems, reduced plastic use, local sourcing in its restaurants, and thoughtful architectural preservation.
Guests can enjoy modern comfort while supporting a property that values environmental responsibility and cultural authenticity.

???? Food & Drink: 9/10
The dining options are exceptional. A huge gourmet breakfast buffet includes à la carte egg dishes, fresh juices, and organic options. There is a second breakfast buffet for Red Level guests, and again well worth it, and that’s where the free flow Ruinart champagne resides.
The breakfast seating is indoor or outdoor, and outside the garden and terrace offer an incredibly elegant and calm location to dine.
Dining at El Jardin de los Duques, is an experience in upscale Spanish cuisine. The garden views and Spanish setting offer a calm oasis in which to relax, and the menu is vast and cusine exceptional, with an excellent array of wines.
The bistro-style Vinoteca Montmartre serves lighter fare with Belle Époque charm and has an extensive wine cellar.
The Coroa Lounge & Garden is ideal for all-day cocktails, snacks, and afternoon tea.
In warmer months, enjoy drinks at the rooftop pool bar with panoramic views of the city and mountains.
For Red Level guests ( as above): Complimentary Ruinart Champagne free-flow, gourmet snacks, and exclusive breakfast offerings in the Red Level Lounge add exceptional value and indulgence.

???? Service: 10/10
Service at Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá Hotel is consistently excellent. The staff are trained, professional, and warm.
The concierge service is excellent – I had two women helping me throughout my stay, both with the same name, and all of their recommendations were first class.
Housekeeping is discreet and thorough and at turn down a neatly wrapped square of luxe chocolate is left on the pillow, which I loved.
The overall experience at Palacio de los Duques Gran Meliá Hotel feels tailored and genuinely elevated and luxurious.Red Level bookings offer superb added value, including larger rooms, all-day complimentary champagne, private lounge access, and premium in-room amenities.
