How to Achieve Adele’s Signature Makeup Look

Adele is fast becoming one of the most celebrated women in the UK. She is brave, beautiful and stylish.

From her bold, brassy personality, to her extraordinary music, and her classically elegant signature makeup look, plus her massive weight loss in recent times, she is a woman to admire.

Hey look is often red lips – though she is known to also rock a natural shade of nude. She wears flawless finished foundations, and her look is all about defining the eyes with luscious long lashes, feminine, soft eyeshadow shades and 1920’s classic old school style, black winged eyeliner across her lids. It is the eyeliner that has made her look iconic.

She has a certain je ne sais quoi that charms everyone.

Adele can attribute her signature makeup look to celebrity makeup artists and beauty expert New Zealander, Michael Ashton, who has worked with Adele for more than 13 years on her makeup look, creating a look she is globally known for.

Here’s what you need to know and use to achieve Adele’s makeup look.

Tip 1: The importance of skin prep

Skin prep and care is key to creating a good base and foundation before applying makeup. . By nourishing the skin with hydrating serums, oils and creams, makeup will last the day, stay in place and skin will stay well hydrated and balanced.

Apply a rich hydrating serum on the skin like the Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum formulated to sink deep into the pores to hydrate cells. Follow with a light-weight, yet nourishing cream like EMBRYOLISSE Lait Creme Concentre designed to lock in moisture and then finish with the CERAVE Skin Renewing Gel Oil to lock in key ingredients to help skin stay smooth and moist throughout the day.

When skin is well hydrated and nourished, you can easily work with any of your favourite foundation products, however, Michael always keeps the ARMANI BEAUTY Luminous Silk Perfect Glow Flawless Oil-Free Foundation in his arsenal as he says it’s the perfect blending foundation. It’s lightweight, buildable, and creates a flawless but realistic-looking finish to the skin. Perfect for everyday as well as events.

Tip 2: Cocktail your eyeliner

This process can take some time to master, so don’t be afraid to make mistakes. If you can’t get the lines right with your eyeliner, use a q-tip dipped in micellar water to remove any unwanted eyeliner that went out of bounds. Michael Ashton walks though how he achieves Adele’s winged eyeliner look:

‘Always start by outlining the shape of the liner, working from the inner to the outer corner of the eye with a black gel liner. Then work the product right into the root of the lashes and then build thickness gradually.

Once you have achieved the desired shape, use a waterproof liquid liner with a precision tip to intensify and refine the look, finishing by winging the end of the liner last, going upwards in a 45-degree angle’.

He recommends the following products to achieve the perfect liner look:

Tip 3: Add lashes for a standout look

If you don’t already have lash extensions, then you’ll need to apply some false lashes to achieve Adele’s look.

For easy application, look at the magnetic adhesive lashes by Ardell that use a magnetic black eyeliner for application of the lashes.

These lashes are easy to use and it is easy to apply the lashes and take them off. You simply apply a thin layer of magnetic eyeliner, and then fit the lashes on and they will stay on for long wear, and easily come off at the end of the day – no special makeup remover required.

Tip 4: Contouring and highlighting is your best friend

Cream based contours and highlighters are the best to use, as they don’t dry out or age the skin. Powders can often seep into the smallest lines on the face, ageing the skin and ruining your polished look.

Try applying the cream-based contour or highlighter to the back of your hand and then use a small buffer brush to blend it into the skin and into your foundation. If you find this method has created some defined lines where the contour shade or highlighter meets foundation, use matching shade in a powder and using circular motions, blend out the lines.

Our top picks for contouring and highlighting are:

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Contour Duo which is a cream-based contour and a highlighter set, which includes a built-in buffer brush for easy application and blending.

Tip 5: Apply lipstick first, then lip liner:

Michael says it’s best to apply lipstick first and then follow with liner. This allows you to define the lips better and outline them, as too often when applying liner first, we reshape the natural curves of our lips giving them an unnatural look.

When you apply the lipstick first you naturally follow your lip line. When you finish with the liner, this prevents any bleeding of colour, but also gives the lips a small amount of definition for a bold look.

For soft lips that stay well hydrated thorughout the day, he recommends VALDÉ BEAUTY Ritual Creamy Satin Lipstick for the lipstick, and then follow with the MAC’s Lip Pencil

Tip 6: Finish with your brows, eye shadow and mascara:

It’s not uncommon to work on the eyes first, then follow with foundation and then finish with the lips. But the order of application depends on what type of eye look you are going for.

If you are working with the blend of multiple shades on your lids, applying foundation afterwards means you have no powder residue stuck to your foundation, which you then have to try and fix after you’ve finished your look. So yes, in those times applying foundation last is best.

However, when achieving Adele’s look, as it’s all about the liner and the lip shades for a glamourous timeless look, eyeshadow shades are kept to a minimum and only contain a hint of colour.

If you don’t already tint your brows, make sure you use a pencil shade which is shade lighter than your natural colour. This will help you blend better into your natural brow. If you choose a shade too dark, it can give off a tattoo look to your brow, which if done professionally is okay, when done at home, can be harsh to your face lines and unflattering. For Adele’s look, brows should be natural and soft looking, so a shade lighter is best.

Try the MAKE BEAUTY Blade Line Refillable Brow Pencil which also comes with an attached brush for easy application and brow definition.

Cream eyeshadows in soft shades like the CHARLOTTE TILBURY Eyes To Mesmerize Cream Eyeshadow in Champagne Pink adds just the right amount of colour to your lids, and has a luscious looking metallic sheen which compliments any skin or eye colour, as it accommodates for both pink skin tones and yellow skin tones.

Michael recommends using Dior Diorshow Mascara to finish off your Adele signature makeup look if you have natural lashes. It helps create full, fluttering lashes, which also nourishes and protects lashes. It’s long lasting too and won’t cake.
