After facing a life-altering health crisis, Stephenie Rodriguez rebuilt her life with remarkable courage — a powerful story of survival, recovery, resilience and the strength to begin again.

A mosquito bite is something most travellers do not even think twice about. It’s an inconvenience to most and forgotten soon after.

For Stephenie Rodriguez, one single mosquito bite during a business trip to Nigeria changed her life forever.

Speaking with luxury travel journalist Renae Leith-Manos on Where To From Here Podcast, Stephenie reflects on the extraordinary journey that saw her go from an experienced global traveller to fighting for her life with cerebral malaria, before rebuilding a life defined by purpose.

WHEN A DREAM TRIP BECAME A MEDICAL EMERGENCY

In 2019, Stephenie travelled to Nigeria for work, where she was attending conferences and meetings with business partners. Having travelled extensively throughout her career, she carefully researched the country’s safety risks before departing.

After leaving Nigeria, she continued travelling through India before heading to Boston. Feeling unwell, Stephenie assumed she was simply suffering from jet lag and exhaustion after weeks of international travel.

Closely after, she collapsed at Boston Logan Airport which led into an 11 day coma. Doctors initially struggled to determine what was causing her severe illness, until an Australian doctor suggested to test for parasites. These tests lead her to be diagnosed with cerebral malaria, which is a rare and often fatal disease.

A LIFE CHANGED

When Stephenie regained consciousness from her coma, she awakes unable to move with very little understanding of what was happening.

The infection had triggered septic shock and multiple organ failure, leaving doctors uncertain whether she would survive. Her family had already travelled to hospital, believing they were they to say goodbye.

Even through all of this, Stephenie beat the odds of two percent of survival, but the damage caused by the disease continued long after she left intensive care. Following the months of treatment and surgeries, Stephenie made the difficult decision to undergo bilateral leg amputations after complications from the infection.

FINDING PURPOSE AFTER TRAUMA

This life changing experience did not let Stephenie define who she is but reshape her purpose and inspire others with her story.

Her background in travel safety led her to expand WanderSafe, a platform designed to help anyone from travelling to commuting. This platform allows people to travel safer by providing practical tools and emergency support.

Throughout the conversation, Stephenie explains that her experience reshaped the way she thinks about risks. She says that safety isn’t about avoiding crime but it’s also about understanding the health risks that can be commonly overlooked when travelling.

For Stephenie, creating WanderSafe became a way to turn an unimaginable experience into something meaningful. Rather than dwelling on what she had lost, she focused on helping others travel with greater confidence and awareness. Her work reflects a commitment to ensuring that the lessons she learned could help prevent similar experiences.

Her mission today is to help ensure others never face the same preventable tragedy.

Redefining Resilience

Recovery did not just stop when Stephenie left the hospital.

After more than 70 surgeries, she became a disability advocate, embraced para fencing and continued travelling internationally. While she describes herself as a “lover, not a fighter”, para fencing helped her discover a competitive side she never knew existed, allowing her to “find her inner fighter”.

Her determination to keep travelling, competing and sharing her story has challenged assumptions about what her life after disability can look like. Instead of allowing her diagnosis to define her future, Stephanie continues to embrace new opportunities while encouraging others to focus on what is still possible, rather than what has been taken away.

For Stephenie, resilience is not about what she has lost, but how she chooses to move forward. She lives her life with gratitude, purpose, and a determination to keep exploring, advocating and challenging perceptions of disability.

MORE THAN A SURVIVAL STORY

Stephenie Rodriguez’s story is ultimately about much more than surviving cerebral malaria.

It is a reminder that even the most unexpected moments can completely alter the direction of life. Yet it also demonstrates that resilience is not measured by what happens to us, but by how we choose to move forward.

Stephenie has become a role model for others, showing that life after adversity can be about discovering new strengths, creating purposes, and continuing to pursue the things you love.
