Oshom Bali Review. Barefoot luxury, deep creativity, and authentic Balinese connection

Oshom Bali is the highly anticipated luxury boutique hotel located in NUANU, the incredible creative city created over 44 hectares of land in Tanah Lot in Bali.

Lauded British entrepreneur Daisy Angus transformed the former 3 bedroom villa into a stunningly intimate 18 room luxury boutique hotel which is already attracting some of the most creative minds in the world to stay and absorb the ocean front energy amongst the thriving NUANU estate it sits within.

NUANU itself is a design lover’s dream with a focus on concious living. It is a global concept that is possibly well ahead of its time. The stunning sculptures, bohy large and small instantly create a fresh but strong, modern, design driven feel. The added artworks, daily and nightly art exhibitions, striking building designs, interiors and style are world class.

NUANU is built on the concept of five key pillars; education, art and culture, nature, health and wellness and living and lifestyle.

Experts in multiple fields visit NUANU and give talks, demonstrations and more around the 5 pillars to paying guests as well as to locals (for free) keen to know more about the world, to foster learning, innovation, and to celebrate diverse artistry.

There is an incredible wellness centre, with huge hammams, saunas with floor to ceiling windows, ice baths and multiple temperatures, and separate wellness residence pavillions are currently being created, Fitness runs are regularly held at NUANU as well as yoga and other classes.

A stay here has many choices for every guest, depending on their priorities and what they hope to learn or get out of their visit. Oshom is the kind of place you check into for a night and end up staying for a week – a rare blend of barefoot luxury, deep creativity, and authentic Balinese connection. If you’re seeking a luxury experience beyond cookie-cutter hotel glamour, this is it.

Guests have access to the uber trendy Luna beach club next door where some of Bali’s most spectacular light shows take place nightly around world class artistic sculptures. It has to be seen and experienced to be understood, but it is exceptional.

Oshom has a fresh, consistently modern food menu, excellent cocktails and great service served up amongst swimming pools, an incredible interior fit out and great tunes.

Oshom itself has a stunning salt water swimming pool, and a trendy open air, open plan restaurant and bar opposite the pool for all day lounging, dining and chilling.

Oshom Bali has direct beach access

Overall Rating: 9/10

Oshom is not just a luxury boutique hotel, and not a typical luxury hotel stay at all – it’s a sensory experience that merges sustainability, creativity, art and serenity.

Sleeping with the sound of the ocean crashing below your room is just the beginning of what feels like an elevated, soulful escape into a dreamy Balinese utopia. Oshom is part retreat, part design haven, part cultural immersion.

You step outside for a morning walk and choose from either the black sand beachfront or the sculpture filled NUANU creative city with rolling tropical greenery – either way it is a magical experience.

An ocean suite at Oshom Bali

Location: 8/10

Tanah Lot is about 90 minutes drive from Bali’s airport but traffic can make the journey longer at different times of the day and night. Once in the NUANU estate, you wont want to leave as the natural environment is so strunning, and nurturing, and in fairness, there is nowhere to really go that is nearby.

Nestled on a dramatic cliff in the brand-new Nuanu Creative City in Tabanan, Oshom is far from the maddening, party crowds of Seminyak or Canggu.

Think wild black sand beaches, volcanic cliffs, and endless greenery. It’s remote yet connected, with everything from a butterfly sanctuary to a rooftop bar and bamboo-wrapped beach club nearby.

You will need a buggy to get around, unless you want to get your daily step count up as we did, but that’s part of the charm.

Oshom Boutique Hotel Bali

Rooms: 9.5/10

Rooms are like suites, and are enormously spacious, minimalist, flooded with natural light and grounded in earthy luxury. The carved door opens to soaring ceilings, timber floors, king beds, and full-length windows overlooking the ocean.

An in-room meditation nook, disco ball wardrobe, Indonesian-crafted décor, and a glittery black sand finish on the walls of the walk in robe (using sand from the beach outside) give it a deeply creative yet restful feel. There are no TV’s unless requested – you’re encouraged to feel, not scroll.

There are two very different room types, and the second type of rooms are tree houses – rooms built above a mangrove swamp painted in black with green and cream interiors and plenty of natural light.

Food is served all day in the main open air restaurant

Food: 8.5/10

The main open air restaurant is somewhere guests spend a lot of time as the vibe is so chilled, open and refreshingly calm. Cement floors, pastel green furniture and pleasant artwork create a haven of luxurious bliss.

Breakfast is included in all stays, and whilst the menu is not extensive, everything on it from shashuka to scrambled eggs, and granola with fresh fruit is excellent.Of an evening there is a two for one happy hour and excellent cocktails are served from negronis to martinis.

A mix of Balinese and Western favourites is served at the onsite restaurant, including Greek salad, gazpacho, and more but the real scene-stealer in terms of food and drink is Luna Beach Club just 4 minutes walk away.

With its bamboo architecture, tiered pools, and stylish eats at “369”, it’s perfect for sunset drinks or laid-back fine dining. Expect freshness, flair, a global standard wine list, and some serious Instagram moments.

Wellness: 9/10

The Lumeira Wellness Spa offers one-of-a-kind experiences like birch-branch body slapping in a giant thermal dome that seats up to 65 people (yes, really), sound healing, massage, two ice baths at different temperatures, and herbal steam.

The second steam room is also over-sized in a pink/ochre building with huge glass floor to ceiling windows overlooking the gardens.

It’s unconventional, deeply immersive, and arguably one of the most unique wellness offerings in Bali.

Meditation spaces, yoga rooms, and creative therapy activities round out the holistic vibe. Massages are also available overlooking the ocean in Oshom, in two calm, quiet, purpose built tents.

Sustainability: 8.5/10

Oshom makes serious efforts to walk the eco-walk. Locally sourced furnishings, black sand walls, recycled materials, electric vehicles onsite, and no TVs by default all speak to a sustainability-first approach.

Plus, its position within NUANU – a project with a deep focus on conscious living – means its footprint goes beyond greenwashing.

Bathroom products are locally sourced and multi-use.

Service: 8/10

Personalised and warm without being overbearing. The staff reflect the hotel’s ethos – creative, calm, and helpful.

Details like bedtime stories at turndown and helpful spa encouragement (even when you’re not keen on cold plunges) give service at Oshom a thoughtful, personal touch.

Oshom Bali in Brief:

Who Is Behind It: Entrepreneur Russian Serge Solonin has created NUANU Bali’s creative city and Oshom is the 18 room luxury boutique hotel on site, founded by Daisy Angus.

Insider Knowledge: Artists from all over the world gravitate here to create, and find and create their community.

Renae says: This is one of the most unique places to stay in Bali as it is super quiet, and world’s away from the hectic pace of shopping, partying and pace that Bali is famous for, and what attracts for most main stream visitors.

Who should stay at Oshom:  Anyone creative, looking for inspiration, as well as couples, singles, friends.

Who shouldn’t stay here: Anyone looking to shop, and engage with clubs, and party venues. It is isolated.

Location: 90 plus minutes from the airport in Bali.

Best culinary delight: The food is fresh and clean – the Greek salad is excellent.

The Highlight: A long, slow bath in a suite filled with fresh lemon and lime overlooking the view of the ocean. Sublime.

The lowlight: If Oshom hosts a party, make sure you join in (a highlight for most guests). As it is a boutique hotel, so small so you will hear the music and the revelry from every room.

Most Instagrammable location: The rooms are beautifully lit, and very flattering for photos, but the vast NUANU estate is packed with both indoor and outdoor instagrammable locations.
