Explore the Remarkable Career of COMO Metropolitan Singapore’s General Manager Ruby Garcia with Luxury Hotel Journalist Renae Leith-Manos
Tune in to a fascinating podcast episode featuring lauded Australian luxury hotel journalist Renae Leith-Manos as she engages in a captivating conversation with Ruby Garcia, the highly respected General Manager of COMO Metropolitan Singapore.
Ruby’s unexpected journey into luxury hospitality began at 21 when, as a single mother needing a job close to home, she submitted resumes to local companies. Her path led her to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Manila, where she found the opportunity to support herself and her one-year-old child.
Leaving her son in the care of her mother, also a single mother, was a heart-wrenching sacrifice. However, Ruby’s determination to provide for her family drove her forward. Working overseas presented additional challenges, especially in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
Ruby faced ingrained prejudices and societal expectations, but each obstacle only fueled her resolve.
A significant milestone in Ruby’s career came in 2018 when she became the General Manager of the world’s first Ritz-Carlton Reserve. This was a groundbreaking achievement as she was the first Asian female General Manager since its opening.
Reflecting on her journey, Ruby wishes she had known earlier about the immense sacrifices of time and effort needed to thrive in the industry. She finds fulfillment in the memories of her career progression, the letters from her family, and the encouragement from colleagues.
Looking back at early career photos and reading letters from her mother and son provide Ruby with the motivation to persevere through adversity. She is immensely grateful for her progress and the ability to inspire those around her. As she puts it, “my career brought me to places that I never knew I could get to.”
Ruby has been significantly influenced by strong women throughout her life. She says, “I have been fortunate to work with strong women above, below, and alongside me.
They have taught me how to lead and be led. Resilience with grace was my takeaway from them, and that I live by.”
To her past self and aspiring professionals, Ruby’s advice is simple yet profound: “believe in yourself, stay true to your values, and never stop pursuing your dreams.”
