Would You Travel to Tuscany to Find Out How Well You’re Ageing? Terme di Saturnia Thinks You Will

Terme di Saturnia, one of Italy’s most famous thermal resorts is moving into medical wellness, with a new longevity programme, advanced diagnostics, sauna rituals and suites with their own thermal pools.

For more than 3,000 years, people have travelled to Saturnia in southern Tuscany to immerse themselves in its naturally warm sulphurous waters. Now one of Italy’s most celebrated thermal destinations is betting that the future of luxury wellness will involve considerably more than soaking in a beautiful pool.

Terme di Saturnia Natural Destination is investing €15 million across 2026 and 2027 in a major transformation centred on longevity, medical diagnostics, private thermal experiences and a new generation of wellness rituals. The investment follows record financial results for the resort and reflects one of the most significant shifts occurring across luxury travel: affluent travellers increasingly want holidays that do more than help them relax. They want to understand how well they are ageing — and what they can potentially do about it.

For women over 40 in particular, this move towards measurable, personalised wellness is difficult to ignore. Skin health, nutrition, metabolic change, physical strength, recovery and healthy ageing are becoming central to the conversation around midlife wellness, and luxury hotels and resorts are rapidly repositioning themselves to meet that demand.

Terme di Saturnia’s answer is Saturnia Natural Longevity, a new Medical Spa programme scheduled to launch officially in September 2026.

What Is Saturnia Natural Longevity?

Rather than offering a generic three-day “detox”, Saturnia is developing a more clinical model in which guests undergo a detailed assessment before a personalised programme is constructed.

The new approach combines medical consultations, laboratory testing, nutrition, movement, thermal treatments and advanced diagnostic technologies. Information gathered during the assessment is used to create what the resort calls a Longevity Score — a multifactor measurement incorporating clinical, metabolic, functional and biological information. The intention is to identify areas potentially influencing healthy ageing and then monitor changes over time.

Diagnostic tools outlined for the programme include digital skin analysis using VISIA, genetic testing, body-composition analysis using bioimpedance and Phase Angle, oxidative-stress testing, ultrasound assessments and sleep evaluation using polysomnography.

This is an important distinction.

The latest wave of luxury wellness is moving away from vague promises to “reset” the body and towards programmes that attempt to measure the guest before prescribing an experience.

Terme di Saturnia is careful not to claim it can stop ageing. Instead, the stated objective is to better understand factors affecting health and quality of life and then create personalised, measurable programmes around them.

Three Different Longevity Programmes

Saturnia Natural Longevity will initially revolve around three areas.

Skin Longevity focuses on skin health and regeneration, combining specialist evaluation with thermal treatments and personalised protocols.

Cellular Energy Longevity focuses on energy, physiological recovery and metabolic efficiency through medicine, movement and other interventions.

Longevity Nutrition concentrates on nutrition and metabolic flexibility, with programmes tailored to the individual rather than relying on a single prescriptive diet.

The programmes will also extend beyond the time a guest is physically at the resort.

Assessment and preparation begin before arrival, while personalised follow-up continues afterwards. Each guest is assigned a Care Manager to coordinate the programme and help maintain continuity once the holiday is over.

That may ultimately prove more important than any single treatment.

One of the weaknesses of traditional destination spas has always been what happens when the guest returns home. A perfectly controlled week of exercise, healthy food and treatments can quickly disappear once normal working and family life resumes. Building pre-arrival assessment and post-stay monitoring into the programme suggests the resort wants longevity to become an ongoing relationship rather than simply another spa package.

Why Terme di Saturnia Is Investing So Heavily in Longevity

The investment is being made from a position of considerable growth.

Terme di Saturnia recorded €28.2 million in revenue during 2025, up around 10 per cent on the previous year and 64 per cent since 2019. More than 60,000 guests stayed at the resort during the year, while the Thermal Park and Club recorded more than 105,000 admissions. Revenue continued to rise by another 10 per cent during the first five months of 2026.

The business is targeting revenue of more than €35 million by the end of 2027, with wellness tourism and longevity forming an increasingly important part of that growth strategy.

Those numbers also illustrate how quickly wellness has moved from being an amenity within a luxury hotel to becoming a major reason to travel.

Private Thermal Pools Are Coming to the Rooms

Not all of the €15 million investment is going into medical testing.

Four new Thermal Pool Junior Suites are being introduced, each with a private garden and its own pool filled directly with Saturnia’s thermal water.

It is a clever development because the water is the one thing competitors cannot replicate.

The natural spring at Saturnia emerges at a constant 37.5°C, and people have travelled to bathe in the area since antiquity. Vogue included Terme di Saturnia in its 2026 Global Spa Guide, highlighting the resort’s extraordinary thermal-water heritage and the unusual sense of calm created around the spring.

Rather than making guests leave their room to participate in that tradition, the new suites essentially bring the spring into a private garden.

For an affluent traveller who increasingly values privacy as highly as marble bathrooms or butler service, that could be one of the resort’s most commercially important additions.

The Rise of the Aufguss Sauna

Another intriguing addition is The Rituals Sauna, which will sit within the resort’s Spring Park and be dedicated to Aufguss rituals and wellness ceremonies.

Aufguss is far more immersive than simply sitting in a hot sauna.

A trained sauna master pours water — often combined with essential oils — over heated stones and uses specialised towel movements to circulate waves of heat, steam and scent through the room. More elaborate versions incorporate music, lighting, choreography and storytelling, turning the sauna session into a communal sensory ritual.

It is becoming an increasingly significant element of international spa culture, partly because it combines two of wellness tourism’s fastest-evolving ideas: thermal therapy and social wellness.

At Saturnia, the new Rituals Sauna will sit alongside a redesigned Roman Bath incorporating an infrared sauna and renewed Turkish bath.

A New Saturnia Suite and Spa Design

The physical transformation extends into the accommodation and spa.

Studio Marco Piva is designing a new 108-square-metre Saturnia Suite, containing two bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as a redesigned spa welcome area. The aesthetic takes its inspiration from the surrounding Tuscan Maremma and the elements of water, earth and light.

The Thermal Park itself is scheduled for a comprehensive renewal during 2027.

There is even investment behind the scenes. A building near the resort is being converted into a modern staff residence with private and communal spaces, an acknowledgement that the employee experience is increasingly important to sustaining high-end hospitality in destinations where accommodation and staff retention can be challenging.

Ancient Water Meets the New Longevity Economy

What makes Terme di Saturnia particularly interesting is the tension between something extremely old and something very new.

The international wellness industry is racing towards biomarkers, longevity scores, personalised nutrition, diagnostic testing and increasingly sophisticated medical programmes.

Saturnia’s competitive advantage, however, is a natural spring that has been attracting people for millennia.

Its next chapter attempts to combine the two.

Guests will be able to undergo advanced testing, receive personalised wellness programmes and discuss metabolic or skin health — then step outside and immerse themselves in warm mineral water that existed long before the term “longevity tourism” was invented.

That combination could prove extremely powerful.

Luxury wellness travellers are becoming more discerning. A beautiful spa, yoga class and green juice are no longer enough to distinguish the world’s leading wellness resorts.

The next generation of destinations will need credible expertise, intelligent personalisation, exceptional surroundings and experiences guests simply cannot reproduce at home.

With €15 million being invested into precisely those areas, Terme di Saturnia is making a serious bid to become one of Europe’s most important luxury longevity destinations.
