Auriga Spa Review at Capella Sydney Review: A Sanctuary Within a Sanctuary

Auriga Spa is a relaxing haven of calm at Capella Sydney.

Sydney is blessed with no shortage of luxury hotel spas, yet very few create the feeling that you’ve left the city entirely. Auriga Spa at Capella Sydney achieves exactly that. Tucked discreetly beneath one of Australia’s most celebrated luxury hotels, it feels less like a hotel amenity and more like a standalone wellness destination in its own right.

From the moment I arrived, what struck me was the sense of calm. While Capella Sydney sits in the heart of the CBD, surrounded by the constant movement and energy of the city, Auriga feels worlds away. The transition from hotel to spa is seamless, yet somehow transformative. The atmosphere is hushed and elegant, with soft lighting, natural textures and a design aesthetic that feels sophisticated without ever being intimidating.

Unlike many hotel spas, where guests are rushed from treatment room to treatment room, Auriga encourages you to slow down and enjoy the entire wellness experience. It is a spa designed for lingering.

One of the first things I noticed was the beautiful separation of facilities. Men and women have their own dedicated change rooms, creating a sense of privacy and tranquillity that immediately elevates the experience. The change rooms themselves are spacious, thoughtfully designed and beautifully maintained, with luxurious finishes that feel entirely in keeping with the Capella brand.

Even the details have been carefully considered. Instead of disposable plastic water bottles, guests are provided with elegant silver Capella-branded water bottles, a small touch that feels both luxurious and environmentally conscious. In an industry increasingly focused on sustainability, it is refreshing to see a luxury hotel finding ways to reduce waste without compromising on the guest experience.

Before my treatment, I spent time exploring the wellness facilities, which are among the finest I have experienced in a Sydney hotel. The sauna is beautifully designed and provides the perfect space to unwind before or after a treatment. Nearby, an ice bowl offers a refreshing contrast experience, helping to stimulate circulation and awaken the senses. There is also a colour therapy shower featuring changing rainbow lighting effects, a playful yet calming addition that contributes to the overall wellness journey.

The facilities feel more aligned with a luxury wellness retreat than a traditional city spa.

The centrepiece of the wellness area is undoubtedly the stunning indoor swimming pool. Generously proportioned and beautifully designed, it feels like a hidden sanctuary beneath the city streets. Natural light filters through the space, creating an atmosphere that is both uplifting and serene. Adjacent to the pool sits a large jacuzzi, inviting guests to soak, relax and completely switch off.

While hotel guests enjoy complimentary access to these facilities, day spa visitors can also access them through selected spa experiences, making Auriga an attractive option for Sydneysiders seeking a luxurious wellness escape without leaving the city.

My treatment was the Replenish Beauty and LED Facial, a 60-minute experience priced at $250 for hotel guests. It proved to be one of the highlights of my visit.

As someone who has experienced facials in luxury hotels and wellness retreats around the world, I can say with confidence that the quality of the therapist makes all the difference. Products, technology and treatment menus are important, but it is the skill of the person performing the treatment that ultimately determines the outcome.

The therapist at Auriga was exceptional.

From the moment the treatment began, it was clear that this was not simply a standard facial following a script. The experience felt highly personalised, with techniques adapted intuitively throughout the treatment. The facial incorporated LED light therapy, which has become increasingly popular for its potential skin rejuvenation benefits, but what stood out most was the extraordinary facial massage.

Often overlooked in modern skincare treatments, facial massage remains one of the most effective techniques for improving circulation, reducing tension and creating a visible glow. The massage at Auriga was among the best I have experienced, combining relaxation with genuine therapeutic benefit. There were moments during the treatment when I felt myself drifting into a deeply restorative state, somewhere between meditation and sleep.

The treatment room itself reflected the broader aesthetic of the spa: calm, elegant and beautifully understated. Nothing felt rushed. Nothing felt transactional. Instead, there was a genuine sense that the goal was to help guests disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with themselves.

Another detail I appreciated was the use of Dyson products within the change rooms. While seemingly minor, luxury is often defined by attention to detail, and Auriga excels in this regard. From the quality of the amenities to the thoughtful layout of the facilities, every aspect of the guest experience feels considered.

What ultimately sets Auriga Spa apart, however, is not any single feature. It is the cumulative effect of many small details working together to create an experience that feels cohesive, sophisticated and deeply relaxing.

In an era where wellness has become one of the defining forces shaping luxury hospitality, Auriga demonstrates what is possible when a hotel truly commits to creating a world-class wellness offering. Rather than treating the spa as an ancillary facility, Capella has created a destination that stands comfortably alongside some of Sydney’s finest wellness experiences.

Whether you are staying at the hotel, celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a day of restoration, Auriga Spa offers something increasingly rare: the opportunity to completely switch off without ever leaving the city.

As I reluctantly made my way back into the bustling streets of Sydney, I found myself thinking about how few places genuinely make you lose track of time. Auriga is one of them. It is elegant without being showy, luxurious without being excessive and restorative in a way that feels entirely authentic.

For anyone seeking one of Sydney’s finest luxury spa experiences, Auriga Spa at Capella Sydney deserves a place at the very top of the list.
