Why You Need Retinol in Your Skin Care Routine

Retinol is becoming the wonder product to help fight ageing.

What is retinol, and do we need to include it in our skincare routine?

The short answer is yes.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that promotes skin renewal, enhances collagen production (which rapidly declines in our 20s), and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Retinol has also been proven to reduce the effects of sun damage and assist with acne healing and other blemish-prone skin-related issues.

We spoke with Daniel Isaacs, Formulation and Development Director at professional skincare brand Medik8 to find out why you should start including retinol A into your skincare routine.

“Although specifically formulated for women over thirty, to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, retinol is okay to use in small doses for younger skin too. In fact, at Medik8, we have identified many more younger women are starting to adopt a healthy skincare routine in their early 20s. So, it’s important to understand how and when to use Retinol skincare products.

Retinol enhances collagen production in the skin, and for most women, this natural producing collagen in the skin usually stops developing in your twenties. So, it’s good that younger women are starting to identify their skin concerns earlier on. Prevention is better than cure, after all.

But this also makes retinol the perfect skincare product for women in their 30s and older. It helps boost natural hydration in the skin, which in the long run prevents any skin aging concerns you may have, such as fine lines and wrinkles.”

Retinol skin care products help the skin rejuvenate, especially at night. It prevents skin roughness and hyperpigmentation, leaving the skin of any age feeling more youthful, glowing, soft and full of hydration.

With retinol, start slowly. You only need a pea-sized amount for your whole face. You must wait for at least 15-minutes before applying any moisturiser.

When you start using retinol, only use it every third day to start before moving on to every day.

“With any new products you are including into your skincare routine, you should always start small. Otherwise, you may end up causing further problems with the skin if you overuse ingredients such as vitamin A. This is something we identified early with the creation of Medik8’s Retinol skincare products.

Most Retinol products are best used at night, as sunlight has been known to diminish their power. However, at Medik8, we have formulated our Retinol products, so they can be used daily, morning and night, without this happening. But we do recommend you don’t use more than one vitamin A product at the same time, as it can increase light sensitivity to the skin, otherwise known as photosynthesis.

For those who want to start slowly introducing retinol into their skincare routine, Medik8 has created a line of serums, starting with low vitamin A potency of 0.3% to a higher potency of 1%. This allows for a phase in the process of using vitamin A to determine how your skin reacts.”

Retinol products can be used on any skin type. Even blemish-prone skin benefits from its use, as vitamin A speeds up the skin cell renewal process, clearing out clogged pores which can lead to break-outs. If you are worried about introducing retinol into your skincare, check with your doctor first.
